About the foundation

The Aquila Foundation is a not-for-profit limited company and an incorporated Scottish Charity which has as its principal objective the advancement of the Christian religion. It does this through the provision of resources to Christian churches and fellowships in the United Kingdom, which adhere to the Basis of Faith and which engage in serving God through worship, discipling, pastoral care and outreach.

Aquila is regulated by the Office of the Scottish Charities Regulator and Companies House Scotland and its annual accounts (which are independently examined) are published.

Trustees

Aquila is governed and managed by a board of eight directors (who are also its charity trustees) - David Vardy, David Laing, Derek Nash, Stephen Percival, Donald Campbell and Douglas Hutchens (all UK) and Blake Sullivan and Blake Schwarz (both USA).

You can read more about their stories here.

Aquila’s “target churches”

  • Are Christ-centred and evangelical
  • Make Word ministry their priority
  • Are aligned with Aquila’s statement of conservative evangelical faith
  • Are established as UK charities
  • Share Aquila’s commitment to “recycle” funds to assist other churches
  • Demonstrate stability and an ability to repay Aquila’s support

Aquila’s business model

Aquila works with churches to provide financial support in a flexible way:

  • The church identifies a property available to purchase which suits its needs
  • Aquila provides financial support for up to five years
  • Aquila may buy the property outright and lease it to the church with the church re-purchasing later
  • Alternatively Aquila may provide short term loan funding alongside another lender
  • In each case Aquila aims to “stand in the gap” to provide what the church needs to capture a market opportunity

“Recycling for the Kingdom”

Aquila is not building a property empire.

A church is committed from the outset to ensure that funds are returned to Aquila either by re-purchase of property or loan repayment, in order that these funds may be applied to support another church with its project.

Aquila’s interest is not limited to traditional church buildings – in many cases a building in the right location may be “redeemed” from secular use which adds another dimension to “recycling”!
